Lamine Yamal’s new contract: Barcelona’s 2030 plan is underway

Barça are sticking to the two-part plan they set out in the summer of 2023.

“Of course he’s going to renew; Lamine is a Barça fan.” These were the words of Jorge Mendes at the Tuttosport gala, where the rising star of world football was crowned the new Golden Boy.

Mendes’ statement reaffirmed that the ‘two-stage renewal’ plan—established during the summer of 2023 by the player’s representative and Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco—remains on track. When Lamine initially signed a contract until 2026, FIFA restrictions prevented him, as a minor, from committing to a deal longer than three years. However, they had already outlined an extension for when he turned 18.

Naturally, the economic terms of this extension have evolved. Lamine’s extraordinary progress last season—capped off by an impressive Euros performance—has catapulted him into the elite tier of world football. His achievements have been recognised with the Golden Boy award, the Kopa Trophy, and the accolade for the best player of the last Euros. These milestones have significantly increased his market value, which now stands at €150 million—€90 million more than just a year ago.

Lamine Yamal wants to stay at FC Barcelona

As a result, the conditions of his upcoming mega-contract are still being carefully negotiated. Jorge Mendes was recently in Barcelona to continue advancing talks that are expected to lead to a successful agreement.

Both publicly and privately, Lamine, who is currently injured, has expressed his clear desire to stay at Barça. Jorge Mendes, known for respecting the wishes of his clients, has a history of keeping players where they want to be. This was evident with Cristiano Ronaldo, who remained at Manchester United until he was ready for a new challenge. The same will apply to Lamine.

Mendes also recognises that few clubs in the world can rival the LaLiga side when it comes to developing and showcasing young talent. Barça, for their part, are fully committed to providing the ideal environment for Lamine, ensuring he can focus solely on his performance on the pitch.

It’s also worth noting that Barça’s upcoming elections in 2026 add another layer of significance. For President Joan Laporta, securing the renewal of the world’s most sought-after young player—alongside the inauguration of the new Camp Nou—would be the ultimate electoral statement.
