Luis Enrique admits he had problems with Messi during first Barcelona season

Luis Enrique has admitted to having some problems with Lionel Messi at Barcelona in his early days at the club.

The issues were particularly hard to manage in the build-up to the Catalans' slip at Anoeta in the 2014/15 season, when they afterwards went on to win the treble.

"Until everything was resolved there was a lot of tension," Luis Enrique confessed to Catalunya Radio.

"I didn't look for it, but it appeared and it had to be managed.

"But today I can only speak wonders of Messi."

The current Spain boss added that he had decided his time at the Camp Nou was up early in his third and final season there.

"At the beginning of the third season I told the club to look for a substitute," he said.

"I no longer had the energy to put into the job.

"It would have been easy to renew and sign a huge contract, in my home with the best players.

"But if I'm honest I think the players needed to continue with someone else.

"I think there comes a time when a message becomes exhausted."
