Luis Figo: Real Madrid cannot 'cry' over loss of Cristiano Ronaldo

  /  autty

Luis Figo won two La Liga titles and the Champions League during a five-year spell with Real Madrid, so he's well qualified to discuss his former club's struggles.

Sportsmail caught up with the ex-Portugal star during Heineken's Champions League Trophy Tour visit to Shanghai this week to see just what he's made of the most turbulent season in the club's recent history.

From Zinedine Zidane's shock return to the future of Gareth Bale, here's what Figo had to say on the big issues at the Bernabeu.

What have you made of Real Madrid's season?

It's not a positive season for Real Madrid, as everyone knows. They are out of all the competitions – in terms of the possibility to win.

The season started really badly and then they changed coach two times.

Were you surprised to see Zinedine Zidane return to the club?

It was a surprise to see him (Zidane) leave and a surprise to see him come back. He knows the club really well and the club knows him really well too.

It was a perfect match in the first experience. Let's see what happens now in the second phase.

He knew how to manage the team, how to manage all the egos, all the talent.

Do Real need to make a lot of new signings this summer?

Like a supporter, I think so. Every year you need to make the fans more interested in the club, more excited, more passionate for the new season.

I think what the club transmit is that they need a striker, a winger and a centre back. I'm sure they will buy four or five players.

Does Gareth Bale have a future at the Bernabeu?

He's had bad luck with injuries and right now the fans are not so tolerant with him.

In football, your value is recognised by what you do in the last game. Unfortunately that's football.

I think he's a great player but you never know what's going to happen in the future.

How much have Real Madrid missed Cristiano Ronaldo this season?

You'll always miss a guy who makes you 60 goals in a season. Football is like that – if you move to another club, life continues for the player, for the club.

You have to focus on the next day, you cannot cry about the decision you took or the club made. It's life.

What have you made of Ronaldo's first season in Italy?

When you are a great professional and you have talent then you adapt. If you are ambitious and you love what you do then the talent always comes out.

How important is the Heineken Trophy Tour in promoting the Champions League to fans around the world?

This is the best club competition in the world so everybody should have the chance to see it with their own eyes and be close to everything related to it.

I was in India recently and these are very big markets for any kind of event, any kind of competition. They love football here (in Shanghai), they love the competition.
