Luton Town's Boxing Day clash with Bristol City becomes the SEVENTH Championship game called off

Luton Town's Championship fixture with Bristol City on Boxing Day has been called off after the Hatters reported a number of Covid cases in their squad.

This means seven out of the ten second-tier fixtures planned for the day after Christmas have now been postponed due to Covid.

Luton told supporters on Christmas Day that they could not fulfil a squad for Sunday's match set for Kenilworth Road - and received permission from the EFL to push back the game.

A statement from the Hatters read: 'We are sorry to inform supporters that the Hatters’ Boxing Day fixture against Bristol City has been postponed.

'The postponement is due to a number of positive COVID-19 cases within the Town playing squad, meaning the fixture cannot be fulfilled.'

As of Saturday afternoon, just three Championship matches are due to be played on Boxing Day, with Middlesbrough hosting Nottingham Forest, Blackpool travelling to Huddersfield and Hull taking on Blackburn.

Wayne Rooney's Derby are due to take on West Brom on December 27, while QPR host Bournemouth on the same day, subject to any further postponements.

Luton will now not play until the New Year after their clash with Swansea on December 29 was postponed after the south Wales side reported a Covid outbreak in their squad.

Nathan Jones' side are next due to play on January 1 against high-flying Coventry City away from home.

Last week, the EFL revealed 31 percent of players at its clubs across its 72 clubs had still not received a COVID jab and 25 percent of players did not intend to have the vaccine.  According to the data, 59 percent of players had been double-jabbed.

And EFL chairman Rick Parry has ruled out a 'circuit-breaker' to momentarily suspend the season - as there is no scientific reasoning to show it will work.

'If we think a circuit breaker will help we will do it but, at the moment, there's no scientific evidence to suggest that it will help,' Parry told the BBC.

'We've got to stick together, stay calm and keep making balanced decisions on the basis of the latest information.'

'We wondered if a short sharp circuit breaker this weekend would help but, frankly, it wouldn't.
