Luxemburgo recalls his best moments during his time at Real Madrid

Former Real Madrid coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo has explained the reasons behind his dismissal from the club back in 2005.

The Brazilian has indicated that it was because of a decision he took to withdraw Ronaldo Nazario in a game, which Madrid were 1-0 up and one player down, just a few minutes before the end.

"The fans at the Bernabeu didn't like the substitution because Ronaldo was the idol and, therefore, Florentino Perez did not like it either," he told The Coaches' Voice.

"After the match he called me and asked me why I replaced Ronaldo.

"I replied that Ronaldo had already done his job, that the match was ending and we were one player down.

"I argued that it was a technical decision and that these decisions have to be made by a coach, even if the fans don't like them.

"He didn't agree with that and replied, 'Here you can't do that, you have to offer a show, the fans want a show.'

"Over the years I realised that perhaps without that discussion with Perez, I would have continued at Real Madrid and I admit that it was unnecessary as we could have spoken at another time, and not after the game when you still feel the tension."

Luxemburgo went on to reveal a text that he received by Zinedine Zidane after his dismissal.

"Contrary to what was said in the media, I had no problem with any of the players," he added.

"They understood perfectly what I wanted and I knew it after receiving a message from Zidane on my phone the day I left the club saying, 'Coach, it's a shame that you had to leave Real Madrid, I learned a lot from you as you put me back in the position where I won the World Cup with France.'"

Finally, he talked about the famous game against Real Sociedad, one which was interrupted by a phone call threat and lasted just six minutes, before having to be played on another date.

The teams were level 1-1 before heading to the pitch for the last few minutes.

"We did a very intense warm-up as we had to get out and be one hundred percent ready from the first second," he noted.

"In the locker room, before jumping on the pitch, I gathered the players and told them that to win this I need them to get the ball to Zidane and Ronaldo.

"I knew that Ronaldo and Zidane had that unique individual quality to win a match like that.

"Ronaldo got the ball and after an individual play he was awarded a penalty, [one which] Zidane converted into goal. "
