Michael Carrick enjoyed yet another win as Manchester United boss on Sunday as his side bested Aston Villa 3-1 at Old Trafford

Manchester United put Aston Villa to the sword 3-1 at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon. Michael Carrick has now orchestrated seven wins from nine games this season with Champions League qualification looking all the more likely.

Carrick's men were defeated 2-1 away at Newcastle United in their previous outing and enjoyed a prolonged break between matches thanks to their lack of FA Cup participation. They hosted Unai Emery's side at the weekend and after a goalless first half prevailed 3-1 thanks to strikes from Casemiro, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko.

A trip to the in-form Bournemouth is next up on their agenda but away from the club, a former player made their long-awaited return. Scott McTominay, who has thrived in Italy with Napoli after leaving United in August 2024, came back from injury on Saturday evening.

The Scottish star was introduced at half-time against Lecce, with Antonio Conte's side trailing 1-0, and he made quite an impact. Mirror Football brings you the latest updates from Old Trafford.

Scott McTominay impresses on return

McTominay had been sidelined since February with tendon inflammation and missed roughly a month with Napoli's medical staff taking a cautious approach. But with his side trailing by a goal, Conte decided to reintroduce the 29-year-old at half-time and his decision paid off.

The midfielder immediately stabilised things in the middle of the park and mere minutes after coming on, Napoli levelled through United loanee Rasmus Hojlund.

Then, in the 68th minute, their comeback was sealed via Matteo Politano. McTominay finished the 2-1 victory with a 90 per cent pass completion rate and reminded United what an influential player they let depart for just £26million.

Conte said after the match: "We were losing and I had to make changes. They're strong players but you have to give them time to get used to the pace and intensity again, and that's not easy.

"They need to have confidence, though, because the greater good is Napoli, and since I'm dealing with well-prepared and decent players, there are no problems.

"McTominay had been out for a month. I had to take on some responsibilities, and so did they. The common good, I repeat, is Napoli and we must secure qualification for the Champions League, which is too important. It is important for the top clubs, let alone for us."

Man Utd learn Real Madrid star's price

While McTominay continues to shine at Napoli, another well-regarded midfielder in Europe could seek an exit. Reports suggest Real Madrid star Eduardo Camavinga is a player the club are willing to listen to offers for.

According to Marca, Los Blancos have slapped a £43m price tag on Camavinga. The Frenchman has been at the Bernabeu since 2021 after signing from Rennes.

But he has struggled for game time of late and it has been suggested that he may soon end up on the chopping block. Several Premier League clubs have allegedly shown an interest and United were originally linked with Camavinga before he headed to Spain nearly five years ago.
