The Spanish national football team won the World Cup, as did Spain U20 and the U15 team. The Spanish futsal team won the European Championship, and both the men's and women's U19 teams became European champions. The beach soccer teams completed the men's and women's double in the European Beach Soccer League, and the women's team also won the Mundialito.
"The best is yet to come," Luis de la Fuente often says when asked about the Spanish national football team's achievements so far. The coach of the current European and world champions sets the bar at excellence, which is also the shared goal of everyone at the Royal Spanish Football Federation. Even so, the Spanish football family has every reason to toast these victories in 2026.
Spain's triumph at the 2026 World Cup was the landmark achievement of a historic year. A second star was added to the Spanish shirt after a brilliant, flawless tournament. From start to finish, Spain showed they had what it takes to be world champions, and they sealed their dominance by beating Argentina in the final.
However, the Spanish men's national team was not the only protagonist in 2026; Spanish football also celebrated successes with other national teams, women's football among them. Spain are not only the current world champions but also the UEFA Women's Nations League champions since December 2025, and the Spanish women's U20 team won the U20 World Cup after beating Japan in Poland. That team gave the world a lesson. Their numbers in the tournament were outstanding, and hardly any opponent could challenge their victory.
The youth national teams were not left behind. The year also brought European titles for Spain's men's and women's U19 teams. In Baku, Spain's U15 internationals were crowned world champions at the FIFA U15 World Cup and U15 Football Festival.
Futsal also took Spain to the top of Europe. Jesús Velasco led the team to victory over Portugal in the European Championship final in Slovenia, reclaiming the continental title for the eighth time. The Spanish women's futsal team's bronze medal at the inaugural World Cup, held in the Philippines at the end of 2025, also deserves mention.
Beach soccer continued this momentum, with both the Spanish men's and women's national teams winning the European Beach Soccer League in Viareggio, Italy, in September. It was the first time in the 30-year history of Spanish beach soccer that Spain achieved the double in this European competition. The Spanish women's team then won the Andalusia Beach Soccer Mundialito in El Puerto de Santa María, in the province of Cádiz.
Looking ahead, as Luis de la Fuente says, the best may be yet to come: the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil, where Spain will compete as reigning world champions; next summer's UEFA Nations League, which the world champions will also contest; and the 2028 Futsal World Cup, for which the futsal team will begin preparing.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation's trophy cabinet could still gain another trophy in 2026. From November 6 to 8, the Spanish futsal team will take part in the Ultimate Cup against opponents including Brazil, Argentina and Portugal. Among the youth teams, the Spanish men's U17 team will compete in the U17 World Cup in Qatar in November.
On the road to 2030, there is no shortage of goals. Spain will be one of the hosts of that World Cup, which will commemorate the tournament's centenary. Rafael Louzán stated that 2026 has already been written into the glorious history of Spanish football, in golden letters.
