It seemed earlier today that Cristiano Ronaldo looked set to join the likes of Denis Law, Peter Schmeichel and Carlos Tevez in playing for both Manchester United and Manchester City during an illustrious.

A shock switch to the Etihad would certainly have left a very bitter taste in the mouth for Red Devils despite his departure from Old Trafford in 2009.

However, in a transfer window that has also seen fellow phenomenon swap countries, Ronaldo has decided to return to the club that helped catalput him into the footballing world's consciousness.

His soon-to-be team-mates were understandably excited, with creator-in-chief Bruno Fernandes tweeting: 'Agent Bruno'? Welcome back home @Cristiano', followed by the goat emoji.

Ronaldo's former Real Madrid team-mate Raphael Varane, who only arrived at the club earlier this month from the Bernabeu, posted two images of the pair in action together for Los Blancos, while fellow new signing Jadon Sancho said: 'SCARY HOURS!'

Marcus Rashford, who was five when Ronaldo first joined the club, had similar sentiments, posting: 'Wow wow wow, he's home @Cristiano' and replied to a @UtdDistrict asking if he was excited about playing with his rival, saying that excitement was an 'understatement', while Jesse Lingard simply wrote: 'VIVA RONALDOOO!!!!'

David De Gea posted a shocked emoji, while captain Harry Maguire replied to United's tweet officially confirming that the transfer had been agreed in principle, saying: 'Welcome home @Cristiano'.

De Gea's predecessor and current Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar posted: 'How are you feeling @ManUtd fans? Always dreamt but never expected it would happen. Welcome back in Manchester @Cristiano'.

Match of the Day presenter and England football legend Gary Lineker could not contain his joy, tweeting to his 8.1million followers: 'Breaking news: @Cristiano is going back to @ManUtd. Wow! Just Wow. What a signing. What a transfer window for United. What a home coming. Love it.'

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville mocked Jamie Carragher's tweet earlier this morning mentioning that City were set to sign the 36-year-old, with Neville scrubbing out the world 'City' in a screenshot of his on-screen sidekick's post and posting three laughing emojis in response.

Carragher was happy to laugh at himself, pinning his out-of-date Telegraph column to the top of his Twitter page and responding with a line from The Office.

Having initially written '#ManCity are signing' in his tweet to promote the column, the former Liverpool stalwart hastily replied with '#ManUnited are signing', with Super Sunday and MNF presenter David Jones firing back: 'They must have read your column @Carra'.
