Ferland Mendy was presented as a Real Madrid player on Wednesday lunchtime, ending an eight-day period in which four players have been introduced at the Santiago Bernabeu.
First up was Luka Jovic; a day later it was Eden Hazard, the jewel in Madrid's new-look crown; on Tuesday, Rodrygo Goes made his long-awaited arrival at the Bernabeu official; and Mendy rounded out the list on Wednesday.
There is still Eder Militao to come, who is currently on international duty with Brazil at the Copa America, in addition to any further transfers.
Mendy arrives at Madrid to compete with one of the most questioned players in the squad last season: Marcelo. Zinedine Zidane was very keen for Los Blancos to seal the signing of the left-back as he views him as a long-term replacement for Marcelo, while his arrival is a further nudge to Sergio Reguilon and Theo Hernandez that they will need to look elsewhere for first-team football next season.
The French influence at Los Blancos is growing, with Mendy becoming the 17th Frenchman to join Madrid. The first was Pedro Parages, who was born in Madrid but had dual nationality because his father was a French merchant who settled in the Spanish capital in the late nineteenth century.
Raymond Kopa was the club's French ambassador on the pitch during Madrid's first dominant spell in Europe, where he won three European Cups, while the modern era has been dominated by Karim Benzema and Raphael Varane, two of the players who helped the club win four Champions League trophies in five years. In addition to them, plus Zidane of course, Mendy will now form a part of Madrid's history. Should things fall into place, there could be another Frenchman on the way, too: Paul Pogba.
