Match Reports

Theo Hernandez had a goal harshly disallowed by VAR as Milan were held to a 0-0 draw by Sassuolo in their final home Serie A game of 2019.

In-form Hernandez thought he had scored his third goal in as many games just after the half-hour mark at San Siro on Sunday, only for VAR to rule it out for a handball from Franck Kessie.

Chasing a third successive league win for the first time since last season, Stefano Pioli's side piled on the pressure after the interval, only to be frustrated by some brilliant Gianluca Pegolo goalkeeping.

Match Events

13' Double chances from Bonaventura and Kessie

Bonaventura takes a first-time shot from outside the penalty area which forces Pegolo into a relatively uncertain parry. The rebound falls right in front of goal for Kessie who comes steaming in, but his second-chance effort is also saved by the goalkeeper, who showed fantastic reaction speed to make both the stops!

27' Calhanoglu's shot wide out

Calhanoglu gets free from Marlon after shifting the ball back onto his right foot, and he curls a cross to the far post for Kessie, who only manages to get his face to the ball - popping it up for an easy Pegolo save.

33' Handball! Theo’s goal disallowed

Milan finally looked as though they’d be rewarded for their first-half intent, but it isn’t to be as VAR plays a central role in disallowing the goal. It did look as though Kessie took the ball in his arm before bringing it down under his control - though the touch didn’t appear to help the Cote D’Ivoire international’s first touch.

41' Bennacer misses a golden chance!

Bennacer intercepts the poor Sassuolo free-kick and runs the length of the pitch, forcing Pegolo to meet the Milan midfielder outside his own penalty area!

54' Calhanoglu's long shot stopped by Pegolo

Bonaventura looks to take charge as he gets to the byline down the left and makes a defender stumble, before attempting to force a shot in at the near post, which is put out by Pegolo. The ensuing corner forces another great save out of the veteran Sassuolo goalkeeper, as Piatek’s header to the right-hand corner is parried by a diving save!

69' Pegolo makes brilliant double-save

Calhanoglu sets himself up for a shot outside the penalty area without a defender around him, but the right-footed effort is dragged disappointingly wide.
