Minister of Sport Vincenzo Spadafora prepares a €400m plan to help grassroots sports and has warned Serie A clubs that “nothing can be like before”.

Spadafora will propose further delay for sports in Italy and has claimed it’s “unrealistic to resume play on May 3”.

The Minister of Sport has also revealed that the postponement of the Olympic Games in Tokyo will allow the government to “extend the measure for training sessions”.

“It’s unrealistic to resume play on May 3,” Spadafora told La Repubblica. “Tomorrow, I will propose to extend the stop of sports competitions of all levels for the rest of April.

“I will extend the measure for training sessions, where we had not intervened because there was still the possibility of the Olympics.”

Spadafora has revealed that the government will assign €400m to amateur level, in an effort to help the rebirth of grassroots sports, whilst warning professional football to prepare for big changes ahead.

“Sport is not just football, and football is not just Serie A. I will assign an extraordinary €400m plan to grassroots sport, to help the amateur level, a fabric that I am sure will be one of the engines of the rebirth.

“For Serie A, on the other hand, I expect requests to be accompanied by a serious desire of change,” he said. “The big clubs live in a bubble, beyond their means, starting with the millionaire salaries of the players.

“They must understand that after this crisis, nothing can be like before.”
