Monchi faces a defensive problem

Sevilla are still coming to terms with their 3-0 loss to Getafe on Sunday, with a number of defensive errors resulting in a damaging defeat for the Andalusians.

Since the appointment of Joaquin Caparros as coach, Sevilla have been flying and had managed to go fourth, before Getafe reclaimed it with their victory last weekend.

Real Betis found cracks in the Sevilla defence in El Gran Derbi, and Getafe opened up those cracks even further.

The lack of competition for places at the back has resulted in a dip in performances from centre-back Simon Kjaer and others alongside him.

Sevilla's highly regarded sporting director, Monchi, returned to the club after a spell at Roma and will no doubt be analysing the situation at the back with the summer transfer window just around the corner.

When he left for Rome, the central defenders were Adil Rami, Nico Pareja, Clement Lenglet, Daniel Carrico and Gabriel Mercado.

Carrico and Mercado are still on the books and are Caparros' first-choice pairing.

Kjaer was brought in for 13 million euros by Oscar Arias, the replacement for Monchi after he left for Roma, and Caparros, who took over from Arias after moving upstairs at the end of last season, was involved in the signings of Sergi Gomez for 5.5m euros, Joris Gnagnon for 15m euros and Maximilian Wober for 11m euros. All in all, a vast expense.

Before going ahead and planning which defenders should be brought in, Monchi will have to decide who will be in charge of the team from next season.

If the profile of manager is someone like Pablo Machin, he will need to have six defenders at his disposal.

The future of Kjaer is up in the air after two difficult seasons at the club.

Monchi will have to decide on Sergi Gomez, Gnagnon and Wober, who all have youth on their side, while Carrico is a big character in the dressing room and may see his contract extended.

Mercado is a more complex one, since the 32-year-old asked for a three-year deal and a pay increase.

It is sure to be a busy summer in Seville.
