On 27 June, Eliaquim Mangala announced his retirement from professional football via social media.

Mangala began his career at Standard Liège before moving to Porto, Manchester City, Valencia, and Everton. He joined Manchester City in August 2014 for €45 million but made only 79 appearances and provided 3 assists. With Manchester City, he won the Premier League title in 2017–18 and two League Cups.
Mangala made his senior debut for France in August 2013 and earned 8 caps, including one substitute appearance at Euro 2016.
