Opinion: Neuer can't continue to stand in Ter Stegen's way

Andoni Zubizarreta took his fair share of criticism when he was Barcelona sporting director.

Like everyone else, he had his successes and failures but bringing Marc-Andre ter Stegen to the club was a great success because he was far from a household name at that time.

Now, he is undoubtedly one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

It isn't an overnight phenomenon either, one that has taken him several seasons.

On Saturday night again Sevilla, the German showed why he has that reputation after a few games in which he hadn't been too decisive.

Barcelona came into the game after six successive games in LaLiga Santander in which they conceded at least one goal.

That streak continued on Saturday but the German was decisive with two vital saves.

On both occasions, he made a double stop that only the best would have been able to pull off.

For the first, he got a spectacular hand to an Andre Silva header before keeping out Franco Vazquez's follow up attempt.

In the closing stages, he repeated the trick to keep out Wissam Ben Yedder and Pablo Sarabia with truly superb stops.

What is striking though is that in Germany, they still rely on Manuel Neuer.

The Bayern Munich goalkeeper is excellent of course but the current form of ter Stegen calls for urgent ownership of the gloves for his country.

Neuer's reputation cannot keep the Barcelona man out any longer.
