Match Report

Harry Kane came off the bench to score the winning goal as Bayern Munich beat PSV 2-1 to knock the Eredivisie leaders out of the Champions League.

PSV entered matchday eight as one of several teams jockeying for a place in the knockout-stage play-offs, and they provided Vincent Kompany's visitors – who were already assured of qualification for the last 16 – with a stern test.

After Tom Bischof's early free-kick skimmed the crossbar, PSV had the better first-half chances, with Ivan Perisic seeing a glancing header brilliantly repelled by Jonas Urbig.

But Bayern improved after half-time and went ahead when Jamal Musiala – who was making his first start since suffering a broken leg at the Club World Cup last July – took in Lennart Karl's pass and blasted into the roof of the net just before the hour mark.

However, PSV hit back when Ismael Saibari arced a wonderful effort into the top-left corner 12 minutes from time, following a give-and-go with Guus Til.

A point would have been enough to send PSV into the play-offs, but their hopes were dashed when Kane applied a composed finish to Luis Diaz's centre in the 84th minute, and the hosts' woes were compounded when Junior Mauro was sent off for a second bookable offence in stoppage time.

Data Debrief: Welcome return for Musiala as Karl's rise continues

Though Kane was ultimately the match-winner as Bayern held onto second place in the league stage, one of the biggest positives Kompany could take from this victory was Musiala's first start in 207 days.

He has now scored two goals in his last three Champions League matches, the same number he scored in his previous 18 Champions League appearances combined.

Karl provided the assist for his goal, slipping a neat pass around the corner on the right side of the area, and the 17-year-old now has four Champions League goal involvements (three goals, one assist) – only Lamine Yamal (10) has managed more before turning 18.

Bayern ultimately won the expected goals (xG) battle by 1.82 to 0.69, though they were tested in the first half, conceding as many as six shots on target before the interval in a Champions League game for just the second time on record (since 2003-04), having also done so versus Ajax in December 2004.
