In an interview broadcast on today’s Téléfoot, Benjamin Pavard notably discussed his return to the France starting eleven against Ireland – his first appearance since the opening game of the World Cup, when his error led to Australia scoring at the start of the match.
The Bayern Munich man first expressed his delight at scoring the sole goal in Dublin – a shot from range into the opposite corner, similar to his famous strike against Argentina at the 2018 World Cup.
He was then asked about his World Cup campaign in Qatar – having been dropped after the first match in favour of Jules Koundé, and later Axel Disasi: “It wasn’t the World Cup I would have wanted.”
Nevertheless, the former Lille man explains that he “understood” Didier Deschamps’ decision – pointing out that he recognises he was at fault in the game against Australia – and that, moving forward, he accepts being deployed as a right-back – despite preferring a more central role – for the sake of the team.
