Pique dominates Spanish papers after Barcelona defender announces retirement

The Spanish media has paid tribute to Gerard Pique after the Barcelona defender announced his shock retirement from football.

Pique, 35, said this Saturday's match against Almeria at the Nou Camp will be his last following a turbulent few months that saw him split from partner Shakira and fall out with the club over his salary.

News of his exit after 14 years at Barcelona understandably dominated the front pages on Friday morning.

Both Marca and Mundo Deportivo went with the headline 'Se Va' ['He goes'] which is a play on Pique's infamous 'Se queda' ['he stays'] tweet just days before Neymar left Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain in 2017.

'He resigns after a year-and-a-half of his contract after winning everything with his club and the national team,' said Marca.

Pique will hang up his boots having won the World Cup and a European Championship with Spain, not to mention eight LaLiga titles, seven Spanish cups and three Champions Leagues with Barcelona.

Mundo pictured Pique celebrating a goal in the Bernabeu, writing: 'Pique announced his retirement in a video. Tomorrow's game against Almeria will be his last at the Nou Camp.'

Diario AS went with a line from Pique's announcement - 'Volvere' or 'I will be back'.

The defender said: 'I will become a regular fan. I will support the team. I will pass my love for Barca to my children, like my family did with me. And you know me, sooner or later, I'll be back.

'I'll see you at the Camp Nou. Long live Barca. Always.'

AS also featured a comment by president Joan Laporta, who responded to the announcement by saying: 'Pique is part of the Barca badge, he has achieved everything with the club.

'He will always be an icon for the Culers [fans], he has more than demonstrated what he wants from Barca. 25 years he has been linked to the club. It has been an honour to have him as a Barca player.'

Catalan paper Sport pictured Pique waving and went with the simple headline: 'Gracies' or 'Thank you.'

L'Esportiu had the headline: 'Pique forever'.

Pique remains a popular figure with many but was booed by supporters during a Las Vegas friendly against Real Madrid earlier this year after his split with Shakira and again more recently this month, this time for refusing to take a pay cut.

In January he furiously shared an image of a payslip after a television pundit had said he was the highest paid player at Barcelona.

At the time he tweeted: 'People like this are paid by public television to defend their friends. Here is 50% of my salary as of 30 December. Have a bit of respect for yourself.'

Pique's decision to retire, before LaLiga break for the World Cup, will alleviate some of those financial woes and no doubt that decision will be well received by supporters.

Pique posted a picture of himself with Neymar and the message ‘he stays’ shortly before the Brazilian’s world record £198million move to PSG in 2017.

He claimed initially it was a guess that Neymar would stay at Barcelona but later changed his story, claiming he already knew he was ‘100 per cent leaving’.
