How does Ballon d’Or voting work?
A pool of 30 candidates is first assembled by editors from France Football together with L’Équipe. Once that shortlist is set, one reporter representing each of the 100 highest-ranked FIFA nations casts a ballot naming their top ten choices for the men’s award.
Points are allocated in descending order—15 for a first-place selection, then 12, 10, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 for the rest. All ballots are added together to form the overall standings. If two players finish with the same score, the number of first-place votes is used as a tiebreaker. If that is also equal, second-place votes are compared, then third, and so on until the tie is broken.
