Tony Pulis lost his first game in charge of Sheffield Wednesday courtesy of a second half winner from Tom Barkhuizen.
Pulis' reign as the Owls boss got off to the worst possible start after striker Josh Windass was sent off after 17 minutes for a high tackle on Joe Rafferty.
Preston forward Barkhuizen scored the only goal of the game just after half time to leave Wednesday bottom of the Championship, the Lilywhites have climbed to 12th.
