Real Betis rescue draw against Espanyol

  /  autty

Espanyol thought they had done enough to take a 1-0 victory away from the first leg of their Copa del Rey quarter-final clash with Real Betis, yet the visitors rescued a late draw thanks to Toni Sanabria.

The Paraguayan forward is almost certain to leave the club this January, with Genoa interested in his services to replace Krzysztof Piatek, yet he may have left the Seville club the perfect parting gift.

It was a match of attacking play from both teams with the hosts having 13 shots to Real Betis' 15, yet it was Quique Setien's desire for possession which gave his side the edge.

Espanyol couldn't hold out in the face of serious pressure from the visitors with Sanabria's strike cancelling out Borja Iglesias' first-half opener.

The intensity at which the match was played was a fine advert for the Copa del Rey with both teams battling for the victory, however Real Betis will feel confident of taking control of the second leg.

Sergio Canales performed expertly in midfield until he was withdrawn for William Carvalho, a move which actually gave Betis more of a strong platform from which to attack.
