Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo separated just under a year ago, in July of 2018. It was an amicable divorce. Both sides had their reasons after an intense decade of coexistence and of being together every day. The relationship had become a little worn down.
Now, around 11 months later, the only conclusion that can be made so far is that both parties ended up losing. Real Madrid didn't realise the void that was left behind, or at least they couldn't find a replacement to fill it in the hyperinflated transfer market. They've just had their worst season in the 21st century.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, has had his worst goalscoring season since 2009. He netted just 28 at Juventus, even less than Karim Benzema and well behind the 61 of his best Real Madrid season. His team didn't go far in the Champions League and that could also cost him in the Ballon d'Or race.
Both parties, the club and the player, have paid a high price for this separation.
