Real Madrid have a third defender to add to their backline ahead of next season, after a deal for Benfica’s Alvaro Carreras was confirmed on Monday evening. The 22-year-old had been targeted by Los Blancos since late May, but have eventually gotten a deal over the line after weeks of negotiations.
Real Madrid CF and Sport Lisboa e Benfica have reached an agreement for the transfer of Álvaro Carreras, who remains tied to our club for the next six seasons, until June 30, 2031.
Álvaro Carreras trained at Real Madrid's youth academy, where he played between 2017 and 2020 in the cadet and youth categories.
He joined Benfica from Manchester United after being named the English club's U23 player of the 2021-22 season. With Benfica, he won the Portuguese League Cup this year.
Álvaro Carreras' presentation will take place today at 1:00 p.m. at Real Madrid City.
Previously, Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez will welcome Carreras for the formal signing ceremony that links our new player to the club for the next six seasons.
After the presentation, Carreras will address the media in the press room at Real Madrid City.
Last season Carreras played 52 games for Benfica, scoring four goals and giving five assists, racking up 4,520 minutes. He also picked up 20 yellow cards in those games. Carreras made his name going forward, but the Spain under-21 international (nine caps) has a more rounded profile than Garcia.
He will be able to provide pace and dynamism going forward, but also more consistent delivery, and a miserly defensive effort. The young defender is also experienced playing in a back four and a back five. His presentation will take place at 13:00 CEST on Tuesday.
