Five years after helping launch the European Super League, Real Madrid have finally withdrawn from the project, bringing a definitive end to one of the most controversial episodes in modern football.

Announced in April 2021 by twelve major European clubs, the Super League aimed to create a closed competition designed to generate higher revenues and more frequent elite matchups. The move immediately triggered fierce opposition from fans, domestic leagues, and UEFA.

A prolonged standoff followed, with UEFA threatening sanctions and exclusion from the Champions League. One by one, English clubs, Italian teams, and Atlético Madrid abandoned the project, while Paris Saint-Germain firmly rejected it from the outset. Over time, only Real M0adrid and FC Barcelona remained committed, until Barcelona formally exited on February 7, leaving the Madrid club isolated.

This afternoon, Real Madrid announced it had reached an agreement with UEFA, confirming its official withdrawal. In a joint statement, the parties emphasized sporting merit, financial sustainability, and an improved fan experience through technology, while also agreeing to resolve ongoing legal disputes. With this decision, the Super League saga closes after nearly five years of conflict, restoring unity to European club football.
