Real Madrid's Brazilian flavour returns with the arrival of Reinier

Real Madrid are about to dive back into the transfer market to sign Reinier from Flamengo, and the teenager's arrival will see the return of the ever-popular Brazilian contingent at the club.

Reinier joins Marcelo, Eder Militao, Casemiro, Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo Goes in the Los Blancos senior squad, and this surpasses the previous high of five back in the 2005/06 season when Juan Ramon Lopez Caro could select from Ronaldo Nazario, Roberto Carlos, Cicinho, Julio Baptista and Robinho.

Los Blancos have always felt an affinity towards the Brazilian market, even more so now that Juni Calafat plays such a prominent role in recruitment.

Florentino Perez himself has been keen to ensure the club don't miss out on another Brazilian superstar after he was pipped at the post to the signing of Neymar by fierce rivals Barcelona in 2011.

Of the current group, Marcelo was the first to arrive 13 years ago back in December of 2006 for a fee of around six million euros, however it did take him the best part of three years to fully adapt to life in the Spanish capital.

He did then take the starting position at left-back, and he duly became the best full-back in world football for a number of years.

Casemiro was a similar bargain, costing five million euros in a transfer from Sao Paulo in 2013, although it wasn't until Zinedine Zidane's arrival as coach that he began to shine in midfield.

However, the three most recent signings from Brazil have all been part of the masterplan conjured up by Perez and Calafat.

Real Madrid saw Paris Saint-Germain purchase Neymar for 222 million euros and it changed the market forever, no longer were quality players available at reasonable prices, and even buying potential like the case of Kylian Mbappe would cost upwards of 100 million euros from that point on.

Now, it's not the case that the most successful club in Champions League history are paupers by any stretch of the imagination, but unlike PSG, they are self sufficient and can only realistically spend what the club can afford.

It's not possible for Real Madrid to any longer sign the absolute best players in world football, unless they have a year left on their contract as was the case with Eden Hazard, and even he was a club record purchase.

So, Calafat has been entrusted with identifying the future stars of the game, the players that will be worth 100 million euros in the future, and Perez has agreed to go and finalise deals for them.

Vinicius Jr's signing at 50 million euros was an eye-catching one, but the club feel it is a gamble worth taking and they have since done the same with Rodrygo and now, Reinier.

A combined fee for the trio came to around 125 million euros, which could potentially save the club almost three times that figure some way down the line.

The Dutch contingent

This isn't the first time Los Blancos have prioritised signing a group of players from one specific nation, with the 2008/09 era seeing Ramon Calderon oversee a policy of signing Dutch stars.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy joined just prior to that and was joined by Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben, Royston Drenthe, Rafael van der Vaart and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

However, they only played together for one season before several departures occurred in the 2009/10 season and Real Madrid will be hoping the same doesn't happen for their Brazilian contingent.
