Rio vs Rooney: War of words between Manchester United legends

Rio Ferdinand has responded to Wayne Rooney after he was labelled arrogant by his former Manchester United and England teammate.

Rooney spoke about a number of his former Manchester United teammates at an exclusive event in Manchester on Saturday night, and his comments about Ferdinand were picked up and widely shared.

"Rio [Ferdinand] was a top player, but arrogant," Rooney said.

"You get paid a lot of money at Manchester United to kick the ball into the net, so just do it.

"I said 'Do your job and give me the ball, give Cristiano Ronaldo the ball and stop standing there messing about'.

"Rio is a top lad but he sometimes did forget he was a defender."

Rio Ferdinand's response to Rooney's comment

Ferdinand has since responded to these comments, on his YouTube show Vibe with Five, and he actually revealed his own frustrations with Rooney.

"I'd be thinking 'just shoot man, don't be doing all these fancy passes and let Scholesy [Paul Scholes] and them do that'," the former centre-back recalled.

"I want you to be up there, cutting edge and bang. Be decisive.

"Wazza [Rooney] could score two goals in a game but not be involved in the game and he would come off with the hump.

"Because he's a street footballer, he wants to be involved in the 90 minutes playing all the time and I used to say 'Bruv I just want goals, I don't care what else you do'."

Ferdinand went on to state that the pair would often have shouting matches on the pitch.

"If the ball came up and he wasn't holding it up then I would be screaming 'Wazza hold it up'," he added.

"He would go 'you do your own job' and we'd be back and forth constant. But, we drove each other on."
