He was undoubtedly one of the most talented Argentine players in the last couple of decades, but Juan Roman Riquelme failed to impress with his performances at Barcelona.

In his sole season at the club in 2002/03, he had various issues with his coaches and teammates following his move from Boca Juniors.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Louis van Gaal wasn't fond of the playmaker's football style.

"I didn't ask for you," he reportedly told the Argentine.

"You're the best player when you have the ball, but when you don't we play with one less."

The Dutchman, who placed Riquelme on the left wing, was dismissed midway through the season and he was replaced by Radomir Antic.

"Upon his arrival, Antic told Riquelme that he was going to be key in the team's recovery," Mundo Deportivo explained.

However, following a 3-0 defeat to Sevilla at the Camp Nou, Barcelona captains asked the Serbian coach to drop Riquelme for the match against Real Mallorca.

In summer, the former Argentina international departed on loan to Villarreal where he managed to rediscover his form.
