Rodri apologises to Bernardo Silva after celebrating his late miss and sparking angry clash with him

Rodri has apologised to his former Manchester City team-mate Bernardo Silva for celebrating his late miss during Spain's 1-0 World Cup victory over Portugal on Monday.

Spain knocked their neighbours out of the competition to progress to the quarter-finals, with Mikel Merino's stoppage-time goal proving the difference in an otherwise lacklustre meeting between the fierce rivals.

Silva was presented with a late opportunity to equalise and force the game into extra time, but was unable to keep his header on target. Referee Anthony Taylor blew his whistle shortly afterwards to signal the end of the game.

Following Silva's miss, a brief confrontation broke out between him and Rodri after the Spain captain stood over his former Manchester City team-mate while he was lying on the floor and celebrated animatedly.

The incident clearly infuriated Silva, who quickly got up off the turf and pushed Rodri away, batting off his attempt to pat him on the head. Silva then marched after Rodri but was restrained by Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon.

After the match, Rodri apologised to his former team-mate, saying: 'I apologise to Bernardo. I was celebrating his miss at the end. It was my fault.'

The pair both played key roles under Pep Guardiola, lifting 11 trophies during a seven-season spell together at City. It was recently announced that Silva will join Real Madrid next season after leaving City when his contract expired this summer.

They may become team-mates once again, with Rodri confirming last month that he will wait until after the World Cup to resolve his future at City amid links with Real Madrid.

The Spain captain has a year left on his contract and has previously indicated that he would like to return to play in his homeland at some stage.

'With a World Cup ahead, my responsibility is to stay focused,' he said in June.

'Anything related to my future will wait until after the World Cup.'

Portugal's elimination means Cristiano Ronaldo has appeared at the World Cup finals for the last time.

The Portuguese talisman touched the ball just 19 times in 96 minutes - the fewest of any starting player by some distance - before shedding tears after his country's elimination signalled the end of his dream of winning one of the few trophies that has eluded him during his illustrious career.

An emotional Ronaldo, who bids farewell to a competition that remains the only blemish on his CV after never even reaching the final, was in tears at full-time after his fate was sealed.

'I'm sad to leave the World Cup this way,' he said after the defeat. 'As I said yesterday, I gave it my all and I leave with a clear conscience. That's the life of a footballer. You have to move forward.

'It was my last World Cup, yes. But as for the rest, there's time to think, to be with my family and not say things in the heat of the moment.'

'I've given my all. I've won three titles with Portugal,' Ronaldo added. 'The 2016 (Euros) title is on the same level as a World Cup.'

Spain will play Belgium in Friday's quarter-final (8pm UK time), with the winners set to face either France or Morocco in the semi-finals.
