Ronaldo and Morata watch Federer make successful comeback on clay in Madrid

Fifty two minutes was all that it took for Roger Federer to announce that he was back on the clay and, possibly, a serious threat to the best players if they are at all below their best.

The Swiss master breezed through his first appearance on the brown dirt in three years, beating Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-2 6-3 with the minimum of fuss, delivering seven aces on the way.

Brazilian football legend Ronaldo and girlfriend Celina Locks in the crowd on Tuesday.

The former Barcelona and Real Madrid star sat next to Atletico striker Alvaro Morata.

'It was a special night for me, I have missed the clay court season and it was a great return,' said Federer. 'I started well and that helped. We all know how to play tennis but I always feel first rounds are generally tricky.

'But for me it was sort of natural, and it feels a bit easier for me because you get some help on the serve here (due to the altitude).'
