Ruud van Nistelrooy has had his say in the long-running Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi debate.
In an appearance on The Overlap with Gary Neville, the former Manchester United star picked his former teammate as the better of the pair, and named the Portugal international, who broke the men's international appearance record against Lichtenstein on Thursday, as the player he would back to score a vital penalty.
'Have you ever seen Cristiano miss one? I would say him. I think his record is the best.'
Van Nistelrooy and Ronaldo spent three seasons under the stewardship of Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford but endured an often tumultuous relationship.
One infamous incident, later recalled by Louis Saha, saw the pair engage in a training ground argument shortly following the death of Ronaldo's father that left the young star in tears.
'Did Ruud make Ronaldo cry? Yeah, there were stories because I think they ended up in an argument at the moment when Cristiano's father had passed away, so it wasn't the right moment,' Saha told Four Four Two.
'Things like that happen when two players have lots of spirit, but I'm sure Ruud regrets some of his words.'
Van Nistelrooy also surprised Neville with his choice for the greatest character that he had shared a dressing room with during his career.
'Joaquin (Neville: 'I thought you said Roy Keane') It could be Joaquin or Roy Keane. You know the one who is at Real Betis now?'
'I was at Malaga with him, and he's also, like you, a TV personality now as well. Also famous for his jokes and he's a real real character. He's a funny guy as well.
Despite making his debut prior to the turn of the millennium, the 41-year-old midfielder still consistently turns out for his boyhood club appearing in Betis' Europa League defeat to Manchester United earlier this month.
