Seedorf reveals what Zidane must do to get Real Madrid back on track

Zinedine Zidane must make his Real Madrid players hungry for success again if he is going to oversee another trophy-laden period, according to Clarence Seedorf.

The Frenchman, who won three back-to-back Champions League trophies during his first spell in charge at the Bernabeu, made a shock return to the club last month.

Zidane has been promised a sizeable summer transfer kitty to get Real back on track after a torrid season, but Seedorf believes fixing the squad's mental fragility is just as important as signing new players.

Speaking to Sportsmail during Heineken's recent Champions League Trophy Tour visit to Shanghai, the former Madrid midfielder said: 'It's very understandable that the club chose that route (to appoint Zidane).

'It's a new challenge, it's a new day. There is good harmony with him and the players for sure.

'It's still this season that is difficult so you can to rebuild from a mental point of view, create that hunger again and set new goals which are not simply winning the Champions League or the league, but how you win, how you play.'

Like Zidane, Seedorf had incredible success during his playing career, winning the Champions League with Real Madrid, AC Milan and Ajax.

Now in charge of the Cameroon national team, the 43-year-old believes playing at the highest level can be of huge benefit when making the transition to management.

'Having had the experience that Zidane has had as a player, it's an incredible added value when it comes to understanding the players, understanding the dressing room and everything about the game,' he said.

'There is the other part which is managing people, programming your training sessions, dealing with all the aspects around the team, which is a whole different ball game. Some are more prepared than others to do it.

'Having been there is an extra. It's not the decisive factor, but it can be if you have the other stuff in place.'

Real will not be involved in this year's Champions League final when it is played at the home of their rivals, Atletico Madrid, but Seedorf is a strong believer in spreading the competition around the world.

He said: 'Heineken and UEFA have created this fantastic Trophy Tour. I started this whole thing in 2006-2007, bringing the cup around the world – Africa, Middle East, South America. Places where people wouldn't even dream about being close to the cup.

'I'm so happy to see this because it's because of these people that we've been able to live football the way we did and enjoy it the way we did. I think this is giving back in a way that is priceless.

'People can be in touch with legends of the game and just feel the experience of the Champions League a little bit.'
