Sergi Roberto’s contract renewal with Barcelona has been set back but both sides are still calm. The announcement seemed imminent but there were some discrepancies and they started again.
Joan Laporta says there are only a few small points to agree on and the club have been focusing on other negotiations like Pedri and Ansu Fati. The players’s people are not nervous about the wait. “Barca haven’t asked us for a meeting and we have not asked for one,” someone close to the player told Sport.
The feeling is that the renewal will happen even if not right away. He’ll accept a pay cut and a substantial deferral on his current deal and Barca propose he stays until 2024.
The player said to Sport recently he’s “optimistic” about staying. He is the third captain and useful in various positions for Koeman.
Sergi Roberto is also a good example for youth team players to see they can make it to the first team if they work hard and play when and where the coach wants. Often the kids are too impatient.
