Sevilla announce Garcia Plaza as Almeyda's successor

Luis Garcia Plaza has been appointed as Sevilla's new head coach on a one-year contract.

Garcia Plaza comes in to replace Matias Almeyda following a run of just one LaLiga win in their last eight matches, which leaves them three points above the relegation zone.

Having taken charge of at least 25 league matches at the club, Almeyda had the third-worst losing percentage as Sevilla manager in the history of LaLiga with 48.3%.

Garcia Plaza has managed several LaLiga clubs during his career, the most recent being Alaves before he was sacked in December 2024.

The 53-year-old has taken charge of 229 matches in the Spanish top flight, winning 66 of those (D58 L105), averaging 1.12 points per game in the division.

"I know the situation isn't what we all want, but rest assured that with the players' hard work, the enthusiasm of the new coaching staff, and above all, [the fans'] support, we're going to turn things around and achieve our ultimate goal," Garcia Plaza said in a statement.

Garcia Plaza's first game in charge comes on April 5 against bottom side Real Oviedo, before overseeing his first home match against Atletico Madrid six days later.
