Sevilla collapse to defeat in Belgium

The Thursday evening match in Liege will go down as one of Sevilla's most disappointing in their recent history with the club collapsing to a defeat and now their Europa League hopes realistically now depend on beating Krasnodar.

Pablo Machin and his charges had hoped to secure their progression into the knockout phase by securing a point from their trip to the Stade Maurice Dufrasne.

Instead it proved to be a rather frustrating evening for the Seville club as they saw a mountain of possession fail to make a difference with Pablo Sarabia's 68th minute red-card making their task all the more difficult.

The statistics will show that Sevilla controlled 70% possession throughout the course of the match, yet it will be their zero shots on target that will be the important statistic coming away from Belgium.

Machin has earned serious plaudits for his work throughout the 2018/19 season, however his style of play simply didn't prove effective on Thursday evening.

Quincy Promes spurned the best chance of the first half when he was played into space inside the penalty area courtesy of a clever slide-rule pass, yet the Dutch forward blazed his shot over the bar.

Standard Liege responded in kind with Mehdi Carcela placing a shot of his own wide of the right-hand post following some fine creativity from Moussa Djenepo.

It would be Djenepo who eventually broke the deadlock just after the hour mark, showing Carcela how to finish off a chance with a smooth low finish into the bottom corner of the Sevilla net.

It was a reward for the host's persistence and it made Sevilla's task more challenging, especially with carving out clear-cut chances proving to be almost impossible as the match drew nearer to its end.

Sevilla were dealt a further blow just six minutes after the opening goal when Sarabia was shown a second yellow card as a result of a clumsy foul.

Wissam Ben Yedder then did have the ball in the back of the net, however the linesman's flag was raised much to the dismay of the Frenchman.

Whilst it was the visitors who needed to secure a point, the Belgian club finished the match the stronger of the two as their numerical advantage began to show.

With just seconds left on the clock Djenepo fired a shot towards goal from close range but it crashed against the crossbar, ensuring the Malian didn't complete a brace.

Matchday six will now be decisive in Group J following Krasnodar's victory over Akhisarspor, with the Russian club sitting relatively comfortably on 12 points.

They travel to the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in the final round of matches whilst Standard Liege face the Turkish side.

Given the fact Akhisarspor sit rock-bottom of the group with five defeats from five matches, it would be fair to assume the Belgians will earn a victory.

Such a result would mean Sevilla would require a win of their own at home to Krasnodar, something they failed to do in the reverse fixture back in October.
