Sleep Expert: Extended, Quality Sleep Enhances Athletic Performance

  /  autty

Sleep expert Eduard Estivill has stated that adequate sleep is crucial for professional athletes' physical recovery and performance, revealing that Messi and Ronaldo sleep up to 11 hours daily, while Barcelona center-back Cubarsi requires 10 hours of sleep.

Estivill discussed the sleep habits of elite athletes on psychologist Encarna López's podcast: "Messi sleeps 11 hours, and Ronaldo also sleeps 11 hours. There's also a very talented young player now, 19-year-old Cubarsi, who says he sleeps 10 hours daily."

He explained: "Some people might find it remarkable, but for a young player who is a starter for both Barcelona and the Spanish national team, this is exactly the amount of sleep he needs. Sleep is like a repair workshop; it not only aids psychological recovery but also repairs the body and muscles."

Estivill is a renowned Spanish sleep medicine specialist, with expertise in clinical neurophysiology, pediatrics, and sleep medicine. He has repeatedly stressed the importance of rest for professional athletes, stating: "In professional sports, the scope for technical improvement is very limited. If top athletes want to continue progressing, they must prioritize rest and recovery. Sleeping longer and better leads to improved athletic performance and a reduced risk of injury."

Cubarsi has also previously discussed his sleep habits. He mentioned that he doesn't follow a fixed pre-sleep routine but requires a completely dark environment. If possible, he also prefers absolute silence to relax more effectively. He typically goes to bed early because he believes that adequate sleep is essential for physical recovery.
