Sport: JJ Gabriel believes Ligue 1 is not competitive enough for his development

According to Spanish outlet Sport, Real Madrid is the only club still in the running for the 16-year-old attacking midfielder.

JJ Gabriel has ruled out PSG, who reportedly made a strong push for the English player in recent weeks. He believes that moving to a less competitive league such as Ligue 1 would not help his development.

He has also repeated his wish to play in Spain, which he sees as offering the best conditions to fully develop his abilities and keep improving.

Multiple reports say Barcelona have withdrawn from the race for the 16-year-old, which makes a move to Real Madrid look like a logical next step. Real Madrid are also said to be strongly interested in him.

Until recently, Bayern were also a possible destination. Bayern officials had held talks with people close to the teenager, and head coach Vincent Kompany is a big admirer of the attacking midfielder.

One thing is certain: JJ Gabriel will leave Man United this summer. He joined the club at age 11 and scored 23 goals in 23 appearances for the U18 team last season, earning the Premier League U18 Player of the Season award. In August, he also made his professional debut, becoming the youngest first-team player in Man United's history.

Under post-Brexit regulations, JJ Gabriel can in principle only join clubs in other countries once he turns 18. In England, he can currently only sign a scholarship contract, and he must wait until he is 17 to sign a professional one. However, his parents' ancestry may offer a way around this rule: according to Sky Sports, JJ Gabriel hopes to apply for a Cypriot passport, which would allow a transfer as early as January.

JJ Gabriel recently made headlines after reportedly asking Man United to cancel his registration with the club. The Telegraph described the move as "shocking" within Man United and "almost unprecedented."
