Tottenham ask Real Madrid for permission to talk to Rodrygo

There isn’t a week that goes by without Rodrygo making headlines. The Brazilian’s future remains a mystery that will need to be resolved sooner rather than later. Real Madrid would be happy to cash in on a player who has barely been used by Xabi Alonso since his arrival. Faced with such a stark panorama, the 24-year-old winger might be tempted to seek a new club.

Tottenham are keen to enter the bidding. According to reports from the UK, the club has already requested authorization to speak directly with the player. Nevertheless, it won’t be a simple operation. There are a number of aspects that would need to be ironed out before Rodrygo makes north London his new home.

Premier League big guns bolster their squads

As AS USA previously reported, Spurs are looking to keep up with their competitors by strengthening their squad for the new campaign. The capital club has seen how Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have all spent money reshaping their teams.

And the arrival of a new investor at Spurs has given the club significant financial muscle. They’ve invested almost €150 million in signings this summer (Mohammed Kudus, Mathys Tel, Kevin Danso, Luka Vuskovic and Kota Takai), but the final touch is still missing.

They want Rodrygo to be the jewel in the crown of Thomas Frank‘s new project. Not at any price, that’s for sure. Because Madrid has valued the winger at $105.8 million (90 million euros). A prohibitive amount for many, although on par with what’s being paid in the Premier League. Tottenham are clear: they want to negotiate.

A natural negotiator like few others,

Daniel Levy is convinced that nothing will be done. The plan of action is detailed down to the last detail: Either they pay the 90 million that Madrid is asking for or they pay the player’s fee—over 10 million net.

Either one or the other; never both. Rodrygo is the target. Both in terms of age and potential, he could be the club’s new spearhead, especially with Heung-min Son entering the final year of his contract and being pursued by Los Angeles FC, where he could be reunited with his former teammate Hugo Lloris.

Interest from England cools

Fortune seems to be smiling on Tottenham’s interests. The affection England showed for the Brazilian at the beginning of the summer has cooled as the transfer window progressed. Because if in June it was thought that offers for Rodrygo would be plentiful, August is on track to deliver a reality check.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool out of the race

While Chelsea are pushing to sign Xavi Simons as a left winger, Liverpool are no longer a priority after Alexander Isak has become available. Two clubs that were initially considered favorites have dropped out of the race without even making an offer.

At Arsenal, meanwhile, his case is still being reviewed. Andrea Berta is a big fan of his talent, but after closing the signing of Viktor Gyökeres, the Emirates Stadium’s cash flow has dwindled. As of today, Tottenham seems to be the only club in a position to make the move for the Brazilian.

Rodrygo’s head is still in Madrid. The club, the player, and the technical staff agreed to sit down after the holidays to discuss a solution to his situation. Rodrygo won’t object to his sale as long as they let him decide where and how. With the market at its midpoint, time is running out. It’s now or never...
