UEFA Vice President: We need a challenger to Infantino, and we're working on it

This week, UEFA Vice President Laura McAllister told talkSPORT in an interview that she hopes to see a challenger emerge against Infantino.

Laura McAllister stated: "There absolutely has to be a challenger to Gianni Infantino because, as he has said himself, he will certainly run for re-election unless something dramatic happens in the next few weeks. Of course, that could happen, but the legal processes—including UEFA's criminal complaint against Infantino and FIFA—take a long time, so we shouldn't get our hopes up too high on that front."

"First, we need a candidate who can appeal to modernized supporters beyond Europe. Football doesn't belong to Europe. Yes, UEFA is a very powerful confederation and generates significant revenue, but football belongs to every football association and club worldwide. On that point, I agree with Infantino: football doesn't belong to anyone in any geographical location."

"We have to unite people behind one candidate, or potentially multiple candidates, and that candidate, whoever they may be, must be based on a mutually agreed reform agenda: increasing transparency, strengthening accountability, reducing political interference, and they must recognize that the FIFA president's role should be to govern football, not to dabble in other areas like Infantino does, whether through the private or political sector."

"I really hope a candidate will emerge to challenge Infantino, and I think we're currently moving in that direction; a lot of work is being done behind the scenes. But we need a credible candidate with modern ideas who can demonstrate why they should win the election next March."
