Tigres have promised to 'act accordingly' after a video of their mascot seemingly making an X-rated gesture to rival supporters went viral.

Before they lost a local derby to Rayados on Saturday, their tiger mascot caused uproar with a gesture that included a paw moving back and forth over their groin.

With the clip continuing to spread, the club were forced to come out and make a statement that distanced themselves from the inappropriate gesture on show before the Liga MX fixture.

The Tigres mascot performed a lewd gesture to the rival dans in attendance.

The mascot then tossed up an angry paw before moving on.

A statement made by Tigres on Twitter read: "In view of the video that is circulating on social networks about the Tigres botarga (mascot) making some inappropriate gestures to the stands: we reproach this type of attitude because it does not represent the values of Tigres.

"We will take appropriate measures to act accordingly."

Liga MX is the top division in the passionate footballing country of Mexico, with the club winning the second-half of the season back in 2019.

In relation to the actions of the mascot, one fan laughed: "I remember going to games in the late 90s and seeing all the inappropriate things the mascot would do."

The statement from the club has brought in 750,000 views on Twitter, with many questioning if it was a bid to divert the attention from bad results.

A fan said: "Do not divert attention from the bad results. This is a means of entertainment."

Mascots have found themselves at the centre of controversy in the past in the Premier League, with Watford's Harry the Hornet once diving in front of Wilfried Zaha.

Back in 2011, Fulham's Billy the Badger apologised to referee Chris Foy having incidentally breakdanced on the corner of the pitch after kick-off.

Arsenal got stick during 2020 cost-cutting measures by parting ways with Gunnersaurus, which former boss Arsene Wenger called 'incomprehensible'.
