Williams: Playing the Supercopa de Espana in Saudi Arabia is 's***'

Inaki Williams has described the Supercopa de Espana being held in Saudi Arabia as "s***" ahead of Athletic Club facing Barcelona in the competition next week.

Athletic are one of four teams participating in the tournament in Jeddah, with the victor of their last-four tie facing either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid in the final.

This will be the seventh edition of the competition to feature four teams since the format changed in 2020, and all but one of those have been held in Saudi Arabia, with the COVID-19 pandemic forcing the 2021 tournament to remain on domestic soil.

Athletic also participated in the 2025 edition following their Copa del Rey triumph the previous year, losing to Barcelona 2-0 in the semi-finals.

After that defeat in January, Williams said: "It's a shame that such a beautiful match was played so far away because I think that if it had been played closer, the stadium would have been filled with many of our fans."

And the Ghana international has now gone one step further by launching a fierce attack on the tournament's organisers.

"For me, playing in Saudi Arabia is s***," Williams told reporters.

"Taking a national competition out to another country does not make things easy for the fans to move and follow the games.

"When we play there, it feels like we are the away team. Above that, in the upcoming days, I am going to be a dad, and it is a big hassle to go away with my wife and son here."

Athletic's three Supercopa titles (1984, 2015 and 2021) are the joint-third most of any club, after Barcelona (15) and Real Madrid (13), and level with Deportivo La Coruna.
