34 Years of Waiting! Inzaghi Guides Pisa to 2nd in Serie B, Promoted to Serie A

Round 37 of Serie B saw Filippo Inzaghi’s Pisa secure promotion to Serie A with two games to spare—thanks to rivals Spezia dropping points—marking Pisa’s return to the top flight after 34 years.

Sassuolo had already clinched their own promotion. Heading into the match, Pisa led Spezia by nine points with three rounds left in Serie B, so their ascent was a mere formality. Despite falling 0–1 away to Bari, Spezia’s 1–2 home loss to Reggiana meant Pisa still sealed their promotion.

Pisa have competed in Serie A for seven seasons in their history, enduring relegation five times. Their most recent drop was in 1990–91—ironically the same season Sampdoria won the title, yet today find themselves fighting in Serie B’s relegation playoffs. This is Pisa’s sixth-ever promotion to Serie A.

This also represents Inzaghi’s second promotion from Serie B to Serie A, having led Benevento up in 2019–20. Earlier, in 2016–17 while managing Venezia in Serie C, he guided them into Serie B.

Next season promises an Inzaghi brothers showdown in Serie A, with Filippo’s Pisa set to face Simone’s Inter—both proudly donning the blue‑black stripes.
