It's a year to the day of Real Madrid's humiliating Champions League elimination by Ajax at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

Erik ten Hag's visitors put in a masterclass of a performance to win 4-1 after a first leg defeat in Amsterdam.

The match

Hakim Ziech and David Neres turned the tie on its head with two first half goals as Real Madrid wasted a number of chances and Gareth Bale hit the post. Dusan Tadic scored a sensational third, before Lasse Schone beat Thibaut Courtois with a stunning freekick to seal Los Blancos' fate.

"A s**t season"

That was how Dani Carvajal assessed the situation as he fought back the tears after the game. The previous week had seen Real Madrid lose to Barcelona in both the Copa del Rey and LaLiga Santander. The defeat to Ajax ended their hopes of lifting a trophy.

Tension in the dressing room

Both Florentino Perez and Sergio Ramos spoke in the dressing room after the game, insisting it was time to take responsibility for the defeat. Ramos wasn't particular popular with anyone having sat the game out through suspension.

The documentary

Ramos watched the game from a private box where he was being filmed as part of his personal documentary series. The centre-back had admitted to purposefully getting himself booked in the first leg to avoid a suspension further on in the tournament.

The Isco case

With his relationship with Santiago Solari non-existent, Isco watched the game from the stands. After finding out he wasn't in the squad, the midfielder missed the final meeting before the game and left Valdebebas on his own accord. He didn't travel to the game with his teammates on the team bus either.

Solari sentenced

After another bust-up with Isco, Solari arrived at the next match against Real Valladolid barely in charge of the squad. Despite the 4-1 win, he was dismissed.

Zinedine Zidane arrives

The day after the Valladolid game, the sacking of Solari and the return of Zidane was announced. There had been rumours about Jose Mourinho making a comeback at the Bernabeu, but it was Zidane who took up the job again. He won his first game in charge, reinstalling Keylor Navas, Marcelo, Isco and Bale into the team against Celta Vigo.
