Berlusconi: Bringing Monza to Serie A after 110 years means more than winning Champions League with AC Milan

Monza president Silvio Berlusconi says he wants AC Milan's new owners to be successful.

RedBird Capital are in the final stages of completing their takeover of Milan from Elliott Management.

Former Milan owner Berlusconi said: "Today I deal with Monza, with nostalgia for the past, but obvious reasons lead me to refrain from entering into the corporate affairs of Milan. I watch with great respect to the new ownership and as a Milan fan I can only hope that they can lead Milan to new great successes."

He continued: "The football team, Monza, had been trying to go to Serie A for 110 years without succeeding. From there my desire was born to give a gift to all the citizens of Monza and Brianza and to bring Monza to A.

"Doing so brought me more joy than winning a Champions League. It is not a way of saying that Monza and Brianza are the land in which I saw my future, buying Monza was an act of love for this land and bringing it to Serie A it meant feeling the joy, the enthusiasm, the passion of an entire community that had been waiting for this moment for 110 years.

"Monza is the third city in Lombardy, a city that symbolises sport in other disciplines and deserved this result."
