A host of football legends attended Gordon McQueen's funeral on Thursday following his death at the age of 70 after a 'cruel' battle with dementia.
McQueen passed away on June 15, with broadcasters rallying around his daughter and Sky Sports presenter Hayley after her heartbreaking loss.
McQueen, who played for Manchester United between 1978 and 1985 and won the FA Cup with the club in 1983, was an extremely popular member of the football community, and his ex-team-mates Bryan Robson and Gordon Strachan arrived at his funeral to bid a final farewell to their friend and offer support to Hayley.
After finishing his playing career, McQueen moved into a role as a pundit on Soccer Saturday.
He became close friends with the show's presenter Jeff Stelling, who was also in attendance at Thursday's ceremony at St Mary's Cathedral, Middlesbrough.
McQueen earned 30 international caps for Scotland, and his international team-mate Eddie Gray was pictured at his funeral.
The national team paid tribute to McQueen ahead of their European Championship qualifier against Georgia earlier this month.
Players and fans at Hampden Park observed a period of applause, while a picture of McQueen was shown on the big screen. while former England internationals Gary Pallister and Peter Reid also arrived on Thursday morning for the ceremony.
McQueen was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2021, with his family regularly documenting his journey to raise awareness about the disease.
His daughter Hayley spoke out about the lack of support her father received from the PFA in an exclusive interview with Mail Sport in March.
‘My sister did get in touch with someone who we won’t name at the PFA. She got an email back which said that it cannot be proven that heading caused this until you have a post-mortem,' Hayley said.
'It also said we had to take into account dad’s “lifestyle choices”. At that point we dropped contact. We saw them in a different light.
'I know there have been changes and I know that Dawn Astle and Penny Watson are working so hard there and they have provided a lot of emotional support for mum – this is not a criticism of them - but to me it seems like things were better run under Gordon Taylor than they are now.’
