Barcelona, together with the Catalan Dragons of Perpignan and England's Wigan Warriors, announced on Friday that the Camp Nou will play host to a Super League rugby fixture between the sides next year.

The game has been scheduled to take place at the home of the Catalan club on May 18 of 2019.

The announcement was made official on Friday at a ceremony held at the stadium which was attended by Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu along with Bernard Guasch and Ian Lenagan of the respective rugby clubs, along with director of the Catalan Sports Council Toni Reig and commissioner of sport for Barcelona City Council, Marta Carranza.

The Catalan Dragons, who incorporated the senyera into their crest and adopted Els Segadors as their anthem, were founded in 2000 and won the Challenge Cup last summer, becoming the first French club ever to do so.

The game at the Camp Nou marks a meeting between the reigning Challenge Cup holders and the current Super League champions Wigan, one of the best clubs in Europe when it comes to 13-man rugby.

"It is a great satisfaction for Barcelona to be able to host this game between two great teams and the fans will surely have a great time in the stands," Bartomeu said.

"I encourage fans of the Dragons to turn our stadium into their home and those of Wigan and Barcelona to also enjoy the experience of a rugby match taking place at the Camp Nou.

"Two years ago, we already hosted the final of the French Top 14 between Toulon and Racing 92 and with more than 99,000 people in the stands, a spectacular atmosphere was created."

For his part, Dragons president Bernard Guasch is equally excited about the opportunity.

"It is an honour for us to be playing in one of the largest stadiums in the world," he continued.

"I think we are still unaware of the impact that an event like this will have for our club, the competition and our sport.

"I'd like to thank president Bartomeu for giving us this opportunity and I hope the match will be the beginning of a great relationship between the two clubs."
