Lazio striker Ciro Immobile has tested positive for Covid and will not take part in their final match of the year away at Venezia on Wednesday.

Immobile had gone into isolation as a precaution immediately after his wife Jessica Melena returned a positive test on Wednesday last week, just a day after the duo had attended Lazio's Christmas party.

Immobile has therefore not been seen at the club's Formello training centre since taking part in afternoon training on Tuesday, but tested negative following several swab tests on Friday.

He still missed their 3-1 win against Genoa that same day, but now Immobile has tested positive for coronavirus in the last 24 hours, and he is therefore now isolating in a wing of the Villa Monte Mario in Rome.

The club - who have yet to confirm the news - however are not concerned by the virus spreading within the club, particularly as the 31-year-old Italy striker is the only player currently affected by the virus.

Maurizio Sarri's men have not been in contact with Immobile for five days now and so there is little fear his infection will cause an outbreak amongst the team.

Immobile has already tested positive for coronavirus since the outbreak of the pandemic, missing Champions League games against Club Bruges and Zenit last season due to the virus.

However, he was allowed to play against Torino in Serie A in between those two European fixtures, netting a goal in a 30-minute appearance against the Turin-based outfit.

Lazio were not punished for that, but president Claudio Lotito was suspended for two months, while two club faced a five-month suspension for the same reason.

Serie A strugglers Salernitana also confirmed they have two players who have tested positive for COVID-19, but the situation appears under control with 98 per cent of the players in the Italian top flight fully vaccinated.

Lazio sit eighth in Serie A this season, just three points behind Roma in fifth ahead of their final match of the calendar year against 16th-place Venezia.

Immobile has nevertheless been in fine form for the capital outfit this season, scoring 13 Serie A goals in 15 appearances and 16 in 21 across all competitions.
