Fans slam Griezmann's announcement he is leaving Atletico Madrid

Fans have slammed Antoine Griezmann for lacking 'loyalty' after the striker announced he intends to leave Atletico Madrid this summer.

Barcelona now look set to sign the Frenchman for €120million (£104m) on July 1, having failed with a bid for him last summer.

Griezmann released an hour-long documentary last summer, at the end of which he confirmed he had rejected Barca and would stay at Atletico - but 12 months later has reversed that decision.

This has led to many supporters on social media slamming Griezmann's decision, with claims he has been motivated by money rather than football.

Others feel Atletico should have pushed harder to keep Griezmann, who only signed a new five-year contract at the Wanda Metropolitano last summer.

However Griezmann's exit from Atletico appears to have been confirmed quickly, following a meeting with manager Diego Simeone on Tuesday night.

Griezmann posted a video on social media in which he declared: 'After speaking with Cholo (Diego Simeone), then with Miguel Angel and the people in the hierarchy of the club I wanted to talk to you – the fans who have always given me so much affection – to tell that you that I have made the decision to leave and to do other things, other challenges.

'It has not been easy to take this path but it's what I feel, it's what I need. I want to thank you for all the affection you have given me during these five years where I have won my first trophies. I have had some incredible moments that I will always remember. I will take you in my heart.'

Griezmann will play his last game for Atletico on Saturday away at Levante, their final fixture of the La Liga season.

After this, he is set to finally join up with Barca, concluding one of the most drawn out transfer sagas in recent memory.
