President Rocco Commisso has claimed he wants to make Fiorentina ‘the princess of the seven sisters’ and fight with he best in Italian football.
With Serie A at a standstill, the Viola chief has revealed that his ‘wish’ would be to resume play ‘in May’, as it would mean that Italy have come out of the difficult period caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
“I wish to start again in May, because it would mean the emergency is over, but I don’t know,” Commisso told the Corriere dello Sport. “Nobody can say what will happen in two weeks, or a month.
“And if another player gets ill, what do we do? The important thing is not to compromise next season too. We talked about our infected players, but what about the others?”
The patron promised a new stadium by 2023 upon his arrival but has been disappointed to learn about the continuous lack of progress and claimed that a new law could help Serie A attract ‘billionaire investors’ to Italy.
“The politics must review their stadium laws, both those to be built and the historical ones, and do it quickly,” he pointed out. “The economy needs investors, football needs investors.
“If you continue to put up obstacles, it will end up that many won’t come to Italy. There are American billionaires ready to invest, but they ask for clear rules, certain times.
“The stadium produces a long-term revenue; I don’t want to make money tomorrow. I want to invest. Infrastructures serves to stabilise the clubs over time. This law does not only concern me, but all entrepreneurs, and the next thirty years.
“We are working to find an alternative to the Artemio Franchi. Therefore, we hope to see a new law. Without infrastructure, there’s no growth. We can’t think of competing with the top clubs in Europe.”
He has vowed to win with the Viola and has revealed that he won’t be stopped by the absence of a new stadium, but simultaneously work to ‘create a great team’.
“Give me time. With my right hand I work for infrastructure, with my left hand I work to create a great team.
“I don’t want to spend ten years before I win, I don’t want to wait for the stadium. I don’t want the make Fiorentina the princess of the teams who are fighting to stay up.
“I want to make her the princess of the seven sisters.”
Fiorentina forward and Italy international Federico Chiesa has been linked with a move away from the Artemio Franchi, but Commisso reassured that he is determined to tie the youngster to a new deal.
“We can’t meet him now, because the virus is stopping us. But it’s important to sign a new contract, both for us and for him.”
But the summer transfer market has not been a priority for the patron, even though he is keeping an eye on who’s available.
“Right now, I don’t look towards the summer,” he added. “Of course, we look at what we need.
“Who wants to leave, who wants to stay and who we have to bring in. I want to invest.”
