HT: Unlucky Milan trail Parma

Milan are trailing 1-0 to Parma at half-time, but saw a goal narrowly ruled offside and hit the woodwork three times with Brahim Diaz and Hakan Calhanoglu.

The Rossoneri were still missing Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Simon Kjaer and Alexis Saelemaekers, so gave Brahim Diaz the chance to shine from the start with returning Ismael Bennacer. The Ducali were without Juraj Kucka, so Gaston Brugman stepped in.

All the chasing pack won, so the pressure was on to win in order to maintain the five-point lead at the top of the Serie A table.

It was the worst possible start for a team already short on defenders, as Matteo Gabbia sprained his ankle when tackled by Andreas Cornelius and had to make way for Pierre Kalulu after five minutes. It was Kalulu’s Serie A debut, although he had started Thursday’s 1-0 Europa League win away to Sparta Prague.

However, Gervinho took on Kalulu down the left flank and beat him to pull back for unmarked Hernani, who smartly steered it into the top corner with the inside of his right boot from 12 yards.

Gervinho ran down the right this time and set up Yann Karamoh for a header wide from close range, but Milan thought they had equalised when Theo Hernandez pulled back from the left for a Brahim Diaz back-heel flick and Castillejo turning in at the back post. However, VAR ruled Castillejo was a few inches offside when Brahim made the flick.

Ante Rebic saw his attempt bravely blocked by Bruno Alves, but Milan were incredibly unlucky on 39 minutes. First Brahim Diaz’s curler bounced off the far top corner of the woodwork, then the move continued and Calhanoglu did exactly the same thing on the crossbar.

It wasn’t over, as in first half stoppages a Calhanoglu free kick flew over the wall and bounced off the upright.
