The Viola only had three points from their previous seven Serie A games, while Hellas were looking for a third consecutive away victory, even if they had lost at home to Sampdoria midweek and were still missing Andrea Favilli, Samuel Di Carmine and Nikola Kalinic.
It was a dramatic start to the game, as within 90 seconds the referee had awarded a penalty. Even after five minutes of waiting and an on-field VAR review, the referee confirmed his decision, although it could certainly be argued it was Eddie Salcedo who tripped Antonio Barreca rather than the other way round. Miguel Veloso kept his cool to roll it in, sending Bartlomiej Dragowski the wrong way.
Fiorentina tried to fight back immediately, Dusan Vlahovic’s glancing header inches wide of the near top corner.
The hosts were also then awarded an equally soft penalty, as Vlahovic went down under pressure from Koray Gunter, but contact seemed to be minimal at best. Vlahovic converted his spot-kick for the second game in a row.
The tension was sky high with the referee showing very little consistency in his cards or free kicks too, irritating both teams.
