It appears Serie B will go ahead this weekend, with Ascoli the latest club to confirm “we’ll take the field as normal”.
The division was controversially reduced to 19 teams after the bankruptcy of Avellino, Bari and Cesena, with the calendar drawn so that one team gets a rest week in every round.
The AIC, the Italian players’ union, has threatened strike action for the lower leagues, but both Perugia and Brescia confirmed yesterday that they’ll play the curtain raiser on Friday.
Today Ascoli have also stating that they will “take the field as normal” on Sunday.
It therefore seems likely that Serie B will go ahead, though there are still no fixtures for Serie C.
